Domain quota
The number of domains you can track simultaneously depends on your plan type. You can view your domain tracking quota as well as choose which domains to track in your “Manage domains” page.
Please note: By default www.example.com and example.com are two separate sub-domains. You will need to allocate two domain credits if you will want to record both of those sub domains at once. Alternatively you can redirect your users automatically so that only one domain is in use. Sub-domains such as blog.example.com are also listed separately so if you want to record from them you need to allocate domain credits for them as well.
Adding a domain to your account
- Create a new project in the "Projects" page for the new domain (unless you want to record it under an existing project).
- Generate a tracking code for the relevant project and add it to the pages you would like to record in the new domain.
- Once some data is received from the new domain the domain will appear in the “Manage Domains” page. You can also force a recording.
- Make sure the new domain is checked in the “Manage Domains” page on your ClickTale account.
Recording from sub-domains
If a vanity domain only redirects to the main domain, the visitor isn't browsing the vanity domain and therefore it doesn't need to be recorded and doesn't account for your domains recording quota.
If you want to aggregate monitoring of several sub-domains (such as blog.example.com, example.com and www.example.com), set the ClickTaleCookieDomain variable to be your domain name (example.com) before the call to the ClickTale() function. This will allow you to associate all of a visitor's visits within the project regardless of the various sub-domains visited.
Lock domain list
Locking the domains list insures that the system solely records visitors from your choice of selected domains. This is particularly useful when unwarranted domains are automatically added to your domain list (for example, referrals from translating sites) and may potentially fill up your domain credits or otherwise use up your monthly recorded pageviews. To lock your domain list, go to the Domain Management page, and tick the ‘Lock Domains’ option. You can re-visit the list of domains you are recording from at any time, and change this setting.
Note: This option is only available for ClickTale Customers who are registered to plans that allow manual management of the domain list.
Stop recording all domains
Activating the ‘stop recording’ feature immediately stops all recordings to your account. This feature does not suspend your account. It simply pauses ClickTale’s recordings of your traffic. Reactivating recordings is done via a direct request to either your ClickTale Support Representative or Account Manager. To stop recordings from all your defined domains, go to the Domain Management page, and tick the ‘Stop Recording’ option.
Note: This option is only available for ClickTale Enterprise Customers.
Blocked recordings
If your account notes you have blocked recordings this could be due to one of the following reasons:
- You are attempting to record an HTTPS page using non-compliant code.
- You might be trying to generate recordings from a domain that is not checked for recording. If this is a domain you control and you wish to discontinue recording, you should remove or comment out the tracking code on its pages. Sometimes domains are also added without your knowledge (see next section).
Why do I have strange domains in my domains management page?
Those domains may be related to various translation, caching or analytics services on the web, such as Google Translate and Windows Live translator. When people use those services to access your site (through the service's domain) the tracking code appears along with the rest of the page.
Please note:
Often recordings from these domains will not show up properly (since a redirect is performed when translation/proxy caching is performed), so it's highly recommended that you uncheck these domains (such as translate.googleusercontent.com) from the “Manage domains” list on your account, otherwise these recordings will just use up your quota.
If you are using all your domain credits any domain added will not be checked for recording on your account’s “Manage domains” list, so an alternative to unchecking the domains you don't want is to record from other domains you control (it can also be sub-domains, such as blog.mydomain.com) to fill up your domain credits. Once those domains are added to your list keep them checked but remove the tracking code. This way other domains which are added to your list will not be automatically checked.
Can I delete domains from my domains management page?
There is no way to remove domains from the list found in the "manage domains" page of your account, however if the domains in question are not checked for recording they should not influence your recording capabilities in any way.
