The Mouse Move Heatmap is a comprehensive visual representation of what visitors are looking at and focusing on within a webpage based on mouse moves from thousands of visitors to a site. Research shows that there is and 84%- 88% correlation between mouse and eye movements, allowing the creation of high-precision heatmaps, based on just the users' mouse movements.

Knowing precisely where your visitors are moving their mouse and what they are looking at supplies relevant and actionable information to help increase conversion rates. Use this information to evaluate the placement of your content, call to action buttons and advertising space.
Data is kept for every version of your page. This allows for assistance in A/B testing of multiple page elements. You can test which content, elements and layout increase conversion rates, what your customers see just before they decide to purchase a product, and how many people miss your call-to-action buttons.

Please note, Heatmaps may need to be selected by date range rather than page version for dynamic sites that serve different versions of the same page to visitors. For more information see our wiki page on how to unify several page versions.

Accessing the Mouse Move Heatmap

You can access the Mouse Move Heatmap by either selecting Heatmaps followed by Mouse Move on the dashboard or simply clicking on the Mouse Move Heatmap graphic located in the top left box on the dashboard screen. By clicking the Edit HM.png button you can then change the parameters of the heatmap. Select the Page URL you are interested in analyzing, followed by the page version or date range. Click "View" to generate the Heatmap.

Heatmap Controls

Control Label Description
Heat Scale
Relates to the colors of the Heatmap. The Red areas of the page correlate to areas with higher mouse movements/click rate whereas the blue (cold) areas of the page show areas with little to no mouse movement/clicks.
Link analytics Get more in depth insight into the way visitors view the page; check the different data available by changing the Link Analytics tooltip.

Clicks: The number of mouse clicks (% of total clicks)

Hovers: The number of mouse hovers (% of total hovers)

Hover Conversion: The percentage of mouse hovers which convert into clicks

Time to Click: The average time from page load to click

Hesitation: The average time from the beginning of the hover to click

Hover Order: The average order the link was hovered over by visitors

Clicking Visitors: The number of visitors who clicked (and the % of the number of visitors who clicked out of all visitors)

Ranking Displays ranking for the link analytics.
Page State Enables the selection of an object for which data is presented. Relevant for pages with overlapping objects (i.e. wizards, drop down menus, etc).

Hidden objects Displays objects that are hidden on page display, like drop-down menus.
Percent Use this button to display information as either a percentage of the number of visitors or the actual number of visitors per item.
Coverage Allows the adjustment of the percentage of the page covered in a heatmap. It can be adjusted from full page (far left) to Peaks (far right).
1st Minute only Selecting this limits the heatmap to mouse moves made only during the first minute of each page visit. Uncheck to run heatmap on entire page visits.
All Elements Displays all elements recognized on the page even if there were no hovers or clicks registered on them.
Transparency Changes the heatmap opacity to have a clearer view of the page.
Clear Background Changes the background color from solid to clear.
Temperature Adjusts heat sensitivity to hovers/clicks/ attention/ scrolls.
Attention Settings: Per visitor <> Per pageview Selecting “Per visitor” counts only one appearance for each visitor. Selecting “Per pageview” counts each pageview.

Engagement time <> Time on page Select the method to calculate the time.

Fold height average Displays a horizontal dashed line representing the average fold height in pixels. On hover, shows fold height average in percent and Fold height median percentage.
Scroll reach average Displays a horizontal dashed line representing the average Scroll Reach height (in pixels and percent).

Relevant for Attention and Scroll-Reach heatmaps only.

Link Analytics

Link Analytics provide a detailed statistical breakdown of every individual clicked element on your page. The HTML elements included in Link Analytics calculation are: <img >, <a >, <button >, <textarea >, <input >, and <select >.

Unlike other analytics programs, ClickTale treats each clicked item as a separate element to be analyzed. Link Analytics are available on all Heatmap types - Mouse Move, Mouse Click, Attention and Scroll Reach.

Hover over an element to view all or click on the Link Analytics menu to choose one. The selected element is highlighted.

Some of the Premium plans allow you to drill-down from the elements on the page and get the list of recordings that include interaction with the clicked element.

There are 8 statistical figures offered with Link Analytics:


Counts the number of clicks and the percent of the total clicks on every link.

Time to Click

The average time between the moment a page has been loaded to the moment a link is clicked.
You can discover which links are the most attractive by seeing the average time it takes for a visitor to click on them.

Clicking Visitors

The number of clicking visitors on the page and their percentage out of all visitors to the page..


The number of mouse hovers over a link.

For a mouse move over an element to be considered as hover, the mouse should be within the element for at least 500 milliseconds (half a second). Hover is counted as one until the mouse leaves the element, if the mouse “hovers” again it will be counted as an additional hover to that element

Hover Order

Ranks links by the average order in which they were hovered-over by visitors. Shows which links attract the mouse first, second and so on.

Hover Time

The average time the mouse hovers over a link, indicating the visitor’s interest level.

The time from entry to element (Mouse Hover) to exit from element (Mouse out), measured by active time. Meaning that if there is no user activity for more than 20 seconds, then the time counter stops until the next activity.


1. Visitor entered element

2. Was active for 3 seconds (moved mouse)

3. Was idle/in-active for 50 seconds

4. Was active for 5 seconds and exited element

Hover time = 3 + 20 + 5 = 28 (the total clock time from entry to exit was 58)

Hover Conversion

The percentage of visitors that clicked the link after hovering over it, shows you how well the link invites visitor interaction.


The average time from the beginning of a mouse hover to the moment of the mouse click.

Engagement Time

Average time a visitor was engaged with the page at the horizontal band where the cursor is currently hovering.


The percentage and number of pageviews in which this section was exposed on the screen (in Scroll-reach HM) or interacted with (in Attention HM).
